OpenAI and Google are both making strides in integrating AI tools into educational environments, aiming to enhance learning and operational efficiency on campuses worldwide.
Google has announced that it is introducing its AI technology, Gemini, to teen students using their school accounts. Previously available only to teens with personal accounts, Gemini aims to equip students with the skills needed for a future dominated by generative AI. Google emphasises that Gemini will help students learn with real-time feedback and has incorporated safeguards to ensure responsible use.
Gemini will be available in English for Google Workspace for Education accounts across more than 100
countries, and administrators can activate it as needed.
Google is also globally launching the Read Along in Classroom feature, which supports students in
building reading skills with real-time assistance. This feature allows educators to assign reading activities and provides insights into students’ reading accuracy, speed, and comprehension.
Additionally, Google is piloting the ability to generate personalised stories tailored to student needs and making it easier for educators to create, manage, and share interactive lessons.
This follows a recent announcement by OpenAI announcing the launch of ChatGPT Edu, a specialised
version of its AI chatbot powered by GPT-4o, tailored for universities. This platform is designed to
support students, faculty, researchers, and campus operations with advanced AI capabilities such as
personalised tutoring, resume reviews, grant application writing, and grading feedback.
Institutions like Oxford, Wharton, UT Austin, Arizona State University, and Columbia have already successfully integrated ChatGPT Enterprise into their systems. Key features of ChatGPT Edu include access to GPT-4o, enhanced data analytics, document summarization, and the ability to create custom GPTs for specific university needs.
The platform also ensures robust security and data privacy, with administrative controls and compliance with educational standards. Both initiatives reflect a growing trend of integrating AI into education to foster better learning, streamline administrative tasks, and enhance the overall educational experience.
