Saudi Arabia Advances LED Technology in Line with Vision 2030

King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has successfully localised and developed blue light-emitting diode (LED) technology, enhancing Saudi Arabia’s global competitiveness and aligning with the Saudi Vision 2030 goals, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
The blue LED technology, which reduces energy consumption by up to 80 per cent and boosts efficiency to 200 lumens per watt—compared to 16 lumens for traditional bulbs—offers extended lifespans 20 times longer than conventional lighting. This breakthrough supports the kingdom’s drive for economic diversification and sustainable development by increasing local content in non-oil sectors.
The innovation also addresses climate change by cutting greenhouse-gas emissions by over six times and reducing electronic waste, marking significant progress towards Saudi Arabia’s sustainable development goals (SDGs).
This achievement highlights the National Laboratory’s efforts to advance research, innovation, and the training of local talent through KACST’s Saudi Semiconductor Program, which focuses on designing and manufacturing electronic chips, the report stated.
