Despite positive first-quarter earnings, search giant Google is laying off at least 200 employees from its Core teams, according to media reports. This restructuring includes the relocation of some positions to India and Mexico.

The Core unit at Google is a key group for developing the technical base of the company’s main products and ensuring online user safety. It includes multiple technical groups such as IT, the Python developer team, technical infrastructure, security foundation, application platforms, core developers, and various engineering roles.

In Sunnyvale, California, filings indicate that at least 50 engineering roles were cut. Internal documents also reveal plans to recruit for similar positions in Mexico and India.

Asim Husain, Vice President of Google Developer Ecosystem, communicated these changes through an email last week and further addressed them at a town hall. He mentioned this adjustment as the most substantial planned cut for his team for the year and emphasised the company’s strategy to stay global yet expand in booming workforce regions to better connect with partners and developer communities.

Since early last year, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has been reducing its workforce, with about 12,000 jobs, or 6% of its staff, slated for cuts following a slump in the online advertising sector. Despite a recent recovery in digital advertising, the company has continued to downsize across various departments this year.

This restructuring occurs as Google experiences its fastest growth rate since early 2022, having reported a 15% increase in first-quarter revenue from the previous year and declared its first-ever dividend alongside a $70 billion buyback.

In response to media inquiries, a Google spokesperson confirmed the Core reorganisation and layoffs, stating that affected employees have the opportunity to apply for other positions within Google and can access outplacement services. The spokesperson said these changes are part of the company’s efforts to invest responsibly in significant priorities and streamline operations to better align resources with key product goals.
