The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) has convened a forum to examine the ethical implications of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the development of a regulatory framework.
The event, held in collaboration with the Department of Health-Abu Dhabi, the Dubai Health Authority, the United Arab Emirates University, and the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, saw participation from government officials, healthcare institutions, and academic representatives.
Discussions focused on the current AI landscape in the UAE’s healthcare sector and a proposed ethical framework drafted by the National Centre for Health Research in partnership with strategic stakeholders. The framework aims to safeguard personal data, ensure transparency and fairness, uphold quality standards, and foster public trust in AI-driven healthcare solutions.
Dr Amin Hussain Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary of the Health Regulations Sector, emphasised the need to stay ahead of rapid technological advancements in AI. Addressing attendees, he underlined the ministry’s role in establishing regulatory mechanisms to ensure the responsible and safe application of AI technologies in medical diagnosis, treatment, and personalised medicine.
“The accelerated digital transformation of healthcare, coupled with the growing role of AI, requires proactive regulatory measures to maintain the highest standards of patient safety and ethical compliance,” Dr Al Amiri stated.
Participants explored how various entities contribute to AI-driven healthcare, assessing regulatory requirements and ethical considerations. The forum also included an interactive session to refine the draft ethical framework, gathering expert insights to guide the adoption of unified ethical guidelines across the sector.
The initiative is seen as a crucial step towards positioning the UAE as a leader in AI-driven healthcare, aligning ethical standards with technological progress while ensuring responsible innovation.
