A new study, Towards a Future of Responsible AI, released by the UAE’s Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications Office, underscores the crucial role of responsible artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future.
The research calls for a reimagining of services across government and private sectors, emphasising the need for innovation that serves humanity. It highlights the importance of forward-thinking frameworks that leverage advanced technologies, ensuring societal progress and long-term prosperity.
The study is based on discussions from a roundtable hosted by the UAE’s AI Office. Participants included Omar Sultan Al Olama, UAE Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications; Dr Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology; Mauricio Lizcano, Colombia’s Minister of Information Technology and Communications; Faisal Al-Bannai, Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs; Kathy Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property in the US; and Majed AlMasmar, Director General of the UAE’s Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority.
Al Olama stressed that scientific research plays a pivotal role in driving sustainable development and digital transformation. He noted that the UAE government prioritises research to enhance its global leadership in emerging fields.
The study highlights the rapid advancements in AI and the need for responsible governance. It advocates for ethical AI frameworks to ensure transparency, fairness, and inclusivity while addressing challenges such as bias and accessibility.
The research also calls for stronger collaboration between policymakers and the private sector to develop regulatory frameworks that anticipate future digital needs. Cybersecurity is identified as a key factor in ensuring AI is used responsibly.
Additionally, the study underscores the importance of bridging gaps between society and policymakers, fostering partnerships that drive responsible AI innovation. It urges global leaders to focus on formulating policies that guide AI’s development towards a secure and equitable digital future.
