At the heart of this shift lies a desire for greater flexibility, control, and transparency—qualities that open source technologies offer in abundance. Unlike proprietary software, open source enables organisations to innovate at pace while avoiding vendor lock-in—an especially valuable benefit as Saudi Arabia builds a more agile, resilient, and future-ready economy.
Promising examples of open source in action are already emerging across the Kingdom. King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), a globally renowned research institution, is partnering with key stakeholders to make significant strides in open source innovation. KAUST’s goal is to enhance societal welfare, with a particular focus on four globally significant areas: food, water, energy, and the environment—all of which align with and advance the ambitions of Vision 2030. Open source technologies have the potential to accelerate progress in these areas and provide a blueprint for other academic institutions to follow.
More broadly, the shift towards open source supports the Kingdom’s push for digital sovereignty. By reducing reliance on closed systems and foreign vendors, Saudi Arabia can exert greater control over its digital infrastructure. As cybersecurity remains a national priority, the transparency that open source code affords becomes a significant advantage. Many modern open source platforms now provide enterprise-grade security—often surpassing proprietary alternatives.
Investing in Talent
Naturally, opportunity brings challenges. While the appetite for open source solutions is growing, many organisations in Saudi Arabia still face hurdles when it comes to scaling these technologies. As innovation accelerates in areas such as Kubernetes, edge computing, and AI, the demand for specialised talent becomes even more critical. Building a skilled, tech-savvy workforce is essential to narrowing this capability gap.
As such, investment in skills development and training is vital to ensure the local workforce is equipped to build, deploy, and maintain open source systems. Beyond talent, businesses must also manage the full lifecycle of these systems—ensuring they remain secure, compliant, and up to date, particularly within complex cloud or hybrid environments.

Initiatives like Platform Code—an open source design system aligned with local and global digital standards—are paving the way for a cloud-native future.
In addition, the Saudi Digital Strategy focuses on accelerating the digital economy, expanding innovation opportunities across both public and private sectors, promoting open collaboration, nurturing local developer communities, and fostering strategic alliances with global open source leaders. These efforts are crucial to establishing a robust ecosystem that supports sustainable growth and reinforces Vision 2030.
