Saudi Arabia unveiled the Riyadh Declaration on Monday, a global initiative for inclusive, innovative, and impactful artificial intelligence (AI). The announcement was made by Abdullah Alswaha, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, at the opening of the 19th session of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), held in Riyadh under the auspices of the United Nations.

The forum, designed to foster international digital cooperation, brought together governments, private sector leaders, non-profits, and entrepreneurs to address key technological challenges.

Alswaha credited Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman for supporting the initiative, emphasising its focus on leveraging AI to improve global digital access and literacy. He stated that AI technologies should be used to tackle pressing global challenges, drive sustainable development, and unlock economic potential worldwide.

The declaration underscores AI’s role in enhancing digital inclusion, promoting environmental sustainability, improving public health systems, and boosting economic opportunities. It also highlights the importance of increasing digital literacy and access to technology for underserved communities.

Under the Crown Prince’s leadership, Alswaha noted, Saudi Arabia has taken a proactive stance on AI as part of its Vision 2030 strategy. The Kingdom aims to set a global example in the responsible development and deployment of AI, addressing inequalities in access to data, algorithms, and computational power.

Saudi Arabia is also working to enhance the fairness and reliability of AI systems by reducing errors that could harm individuals or societies. Responsible and secure data practices remain a priority, with the Kingdom focusing on harnessing AI to benefit society as a whole, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
