Qualcomm and Google Collaborate on Automotive AI

Qualcomm has a history of powering mobile devices with its chips designed for Google’s Android operating system, and it has now branched into the automotive sector. The company’s chips are capable of supporting a vehicle’s dashboard and automated driving systems used by General Motors and other manufacturers. During the announcement, Qualcomm revealed it is partnering with Google to develop a version of Android Automotive OS that will function seamlessly on Qualcomm’s chips.

While many consumers recognize Google’s Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for displaying smartphone apps in vehicles, Android Automotive OS serves as an underlying platform that automakers use to drive their vehicle computing systems. Through their joint initiative, Qualcomm and Google aim to empower automakers to utilize this technology along with Google’s AI to build bespoke voice assistants that operate independently of a driver’s phone.

Nakul Duggal, group manager for automotive at Qualcomm, explained the partnership, stating, “Historically, we have worked together but independently, often planning collaboratively while engaging customers separately. We have decided to approach this differently to minimize friction and confusion.”

Additionally, Qualcomm introduced two new chips on Tuesday: the Snapdragon Cockpit Elite for powering dashboards and the Snapdragon Ride Elite for self-driving capabilities. The company announced that Mercedes-Benz Group intends to implement the Snapdragon Elite Cockpit chip in upcoming vehicles, although specific timelines and vehicle models were not disclosed.
