Microsoft announced a $3.2 billion investment to expand its cloud and AI infrastructure in Sweden over the next two years.

The surge in generative AI demand has driven tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon Web Services to invest heavily in European data centres.

Microsoft will deploy 20,000 advanced graphics processing units at its Swedish sites in Sandviken, Gävle, and Staffanstorp, utilising Nvidia’s processors, with potential use of AMD and Microsoft’s own chips. The company aims to boost AI adoption across the Nordic region, including training 250,000 Swedes in AI skills over three years.

Microsoft’s commitment also includes significant investments in renewable energy, securing nearly 1,000 MW in Sweden. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson pitched AI as a pivotal technological transformation, aligning with a broader strategy of investment following inflation control.

The AI sector, projected to approach a $1 trillion opportunity, continues to drive substantial investments in data centres to support power-intensive large language models, positioning Sweden as a key hub for technological advancement.
