Snap and Meta have both introduced new augmented reality (AR) glasses, marking a significant step in wearable tech development aimed at competing with smartphones. In September, Snap revealed the fifth generation of its Spectacles, a device that overlays digital graphics onto the real world. This AR technology is currently available exclusively to developers, who can subscribe to it for $99 per month over a year to create AR apps for the device.

Later in the month, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg showcased the company’s latest AR glasses prototype, called Orion, during their annual conference. Orion can project both 2D and 3D content onto the physical environment and employs AI to analyse user behaviour, offering proactive suggestions. The device operates using hand gestures and can also interpret signals from the body, including the brain, through wristbands. This innovation marks a shift towards more integrated, wearable AR solutions.
