Katy Perry Met Gala AI fakes even fooled her mom

It seems impossible to hold any big event these days without some AI talking point coming out of it. In a stunning twist at this year’s Met Gala, Katy Perry became the centre of an AI-generated image hoax, fooling even her own mother with strikingly realistic photos showing her at the event.
On Monday night, during the frenzy of Met Gala coverage, images surfaced online depicting Perry in a billowing floral gown perfectly adhering to this year’s theme, “The Garden of Time.” Inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 short story and echoing the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” the gown seemed a seamless fit.
However, the excitement was short-lived. Perry quickly took to Instagram to clarify that she was not at the event, attributing the confusion to artificial intelligence. With 207 million followers watching, Perry posted on her account, “Couldn’t make it to the Met, had to work,” alongside a carousel of images, including the two AI-generated Met Gala appearances. A third image revealed a text message from her mother, Mary Perry, who exclaimed, “What a gorgeous gown, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float.” Perry humorously responded, “lol mom the AI got you, too, BEWARE.”
